Before — parked cars and background clutter competing with the branded vehicle
Overview
M&E Accident Repair Centre is an insurance-approved bodyshop in Leicester. As their marketing apprentice I ran day-to-day marketing across digital channels and offline collateral — planning and creating content, keeping the online presence current, supporting business events, making ads for internal service teams and monitoring what actually landed. The work split into reactive content around real business moments, and systematic work that left behind research and workflows the team kept using.
Challenge
Accident repair is a distress purchase. Nobody follows a bodyshop for fun — they find one after a crash, usually stressed, usually comparing two or three at speed. So the marketing has to do two things at once: be visible at the moment of search, and give an anxious customer a reason to trust this one over the others. That means turning technical repair standards into something a non-expert can weigh up quickly.
Audience
Car owners in and around Leicester needing insurance-approved accident repair, plus the insurers, manufacturers and fleet partners who refer work — a trade audience assessing credentials, and a consumer audience assessing trust.
Objectives
- Keep a consistent, current presence across social and search
- Turn business milestones into credibility rather than letting them pass unmarked
- Produce professional vehicle imagery without hiring a photographer
- Understand where M&E actually stood against named competitors
- Leave behind repeatable processes, not just finished assets
My responsibilities
- Planned and created multi-format content across Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn
- Shot and edited vehicle photography, including background cleanup and registration redaction
- Produced reactive content around milestones such as the Volvo approval
- Supported business events and produced the collateral for them
- Created ads for internal service teams, including ADAS calibration
- Built a SWOT and five-platform benchmark against two named competitors
- Researched SEO keyword gaps and made recommendations for the website
- Coordinated external suppliers for print and event materials
- Collaborated with senior stakeholders and operational teams to translate technical work into customer-facing content
- Presented findings to my training assessor for formal sign-off
Research & insight
- Benchmarked posting frequency, following and engagement against a national competitor and a local rival across five platforms
- Found inconsistent posting was the clearest weakness across the entire competitor set, not just M&E — meaning consistency alone was a competitive advantage available for free
- Used a smaller competitor's high-performing paid YouTube advertisement to identify SEO keywords M&E was not targeting
- Recognised that customers at the consideration stage respond to third-party validation more than self-description, which is why the Volvo approval mattered more than any service post
Strategy
- Lead with proof over promotion: manufacturer approvals and community involvement do more than service descriptions
- Recommend consistent posting as the highest-leverage fix, ahead of any paid spend
- Target SEO around "insurance-approved" and "accident repair" positioning rather than competing on generic "car repair" terms
- Standardise production so quality does not depend on who happens to be doing it
Channels used
- Local customer trust, existing followers and community visibility
- Visual credibility — vehicle photography and workshop content
- Trade audience: insurers, manufacturers and referral partners
- Website
- Content updates and the SEO recommendations from the competitor research
- SEO
- Keyword gap research and site-wide keyword recommendations
- TikTok
- Benchmarked against competitors for posting frequency and reach
- YouTube
- Competitor paid-ad analysis that informed keyword targeting
Creative execution
- Volvo Approved Bodyshop announcement, built around the handover photograph with the Volvo UK management team
- Vehicle photo editing: background cleanup, removal of distracting parked cars and concealment of visible registrations, keeping the vehicle itself honest and unretouched
- Breast cancer awareness fundraising day content, shot and published as community proof
- ADAS calibration service promotional content for an internal service team
- Branded business cards and print collateral produced with external suppliers
- A SWOT covering M&E and two direct competitors
- A comparison table of followers, posting frequency and engagement across five platforms
- A full seasonal campaign brief with offer design, channel mix, week-by-week timeline and success metrics
Deliverables
- Reactive social content across three platforms
- Vehicle photography, edited and cleared for public marketing
- A shoot-and-edit workflow plus a photo shoot checklist covering equipment, shot list, brand elements, consent and post-production
- An organised asset library the team can reuse
- SWOT and five-platform competitor benchmarking
- SEO keyword recommendations
- Event and print collateral
- A complete seasonal campaign brief
Results
- Volvo Approved Bodyshop content published across Facebook, Instagram and Google Business Profile as trust-building proof for customers, insurers and trade partners
- A repeatable shoot-and-edit workflow adopted by the wider team, with a checklist that standardises every future shoot
- An organised asset library so content can be found and reused rather than reshot
- SEO keywords from the competitor research adopted site-wide
- Competitor analysis and campaign plan approved by my training assessor as meeting the apprenticeship standard
- “This is the kind of quality work that we can move forward with.” — apprenticeship training assessor, on this project
Lessons learned
- Third-party validation outperforms self-promotion. The Volvo approval post did more for credibility than any number of posts describing our own standards, because customers discount what a business says about itself
- Posting consistency, not follower count, was the clearest differentiator across every competitor benchmarked — a smaller account posting every few days looks more credible than a bigger one that goes quiet for months
- Editing marketing photography has an honesty line: cleaning a distracting background and hiding a registration plate is fair, altering the vehicle itself is not. Deciding that line up front is what made the workflow reusable
- The most valuable thing I left behind was not an asset but a process — the checklist meant the standard held after I finished the placement
